There are strong drivers to improve asset performance in the midstream sector and reduce the frequency of incidents. Data Analytics and better management of process safety data provide a solution for pipeline operators to improve management of pipeline integrity and comply with the US Department of Transportation Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) regulations. The goals are to drive safer pipeline operations while safeguarding the environment and maximizing a company's return on investment.
As the midstream business matures in its path to fully benefit from data analytics and data management, this technology application allows for the design of data-driven and self-aware physical assets, whose performance and state of health are continually and holistically monitored and predicted.
This paper addresses the regulatory and industrial context of data analytics and data management, the evolution of these solutions as well as their frameworks with a focus on midstream business. It also presents suggestions on how midstream companies can get started in achieving efficiency and effectiveness with data analytics and data management.
