Understand Your Cyber Risk
Building on research efforts led by ABS, our Cyber Risk experts are leading maritime and offshore cyber security with an easily understandable, scalable approach to measuring and managing cyber security risk for a single asset or an entire fleet.
A company's demonstrated ability to manage and mitigate cyber risk can impact everything from insurance rates, to investment levels, to its competitive position in the market. These business drivers are increasing across all industrial sectors, including the maritime industry, making cyber security a business imperative. ABS Group is working across the marine and offshore value chain to develop solutions that enable our clients to reduce cyber risks to improve safety and remain competitive.
The optimal time to consider implementing a robust cyber security program on board your asset is during the earliest stages of design and construction or when a vessel is in drydock. Our Cyber Risk Reduction and Cyber Risk Rating (CybeR2)™ Program helps shipyards, marine and offshore owner/operators and shoreside ports and terminal operators assess, understand and control cyber risk for more secure and compliant assets.
Our comprehensive cyber security solutions include:
- Information Technology (IT) and operational technology (OT) capabilities at every stage of defense
- Cyber Security Assessment using our award-winning FCI Cyber Risk™ Model
- Cyber Security Program Standup and Awareness Training
- OT Cyber Security Management Office and Incident Response

Path to Compliance for IMO Cyber Risk Management Guidelines
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) encourages organizations to address cyber risk in a safety management system (SMS) no later than the first annual verification of the company's Document of compliance after 1 January 2021. Compliance to meet the IMO Cyber Risk Management Guidelines will require assessing, identifying and developing the set of risk-based security measures appropriate to manage cyber risks.
ABS Group offers two options for IMO Cyber Risk Management services that align with your path to compliance. These service options not only meet IMO's guidelines, they also comply with the Baltic and International Maritime Council (BIMCO), the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Cyber Security Framework and ISO/IEC cyber security standards.
Building Risk Controls for Cyber Resiliency
Building your cyber defense in depth and breadth means developing a comprehensive set of security measures that spans your operations for a more holistic risk picture. ABS Group's Cyber Security team will help to assess, identify and prioritize which combination of controls best addresses each company's maritime cyber risks.
Our solutions are focused on delivering capabilities that help clients reduce the likelihood and impact of a cyber incident. This includes the installation of cyber technology and the ongoing management of cyber services, including security monitoring, identity management and asset management.

Award-Winning FCI Cyber Risk Model
Powering our cyber security solutions is the ABS FCI Cyber Risk™ method used to measure cyber security risks associated with OT assets. This proprietary approach provides marine and offshore clients with a risk index for their OT assets, giving owners and operators an actionable strategy to reduce cyber risk onboard a vessel or offshore facility. Effectively, our cyber security solutions place the controls for responding to cyber risks back into the hands of the asset owner.
The FCI Cyber Risk method was developed following a two-year research contract with the Maritime Security Center—a U.S. Department of Homeland Security Center of Excellence—led by Stevens Institute of Technology and including the U.S. Department of Defense.
