20: Design Scope Issue

Definition/Typical Issues
Did the design scope fail to consider all interactions of the equipment with other processes and equipment in the facility?
Examples
Example 1
- An engineer did not account for all types of vehicles that would be required to enter the plant in the design of the guard house and gate. As a result, some of the outside responder's fire trucks can no longer enter the plant's front gate because they are wider than the new entrance.
Example 2
- An engineer did not account for all of the materials that were to be moved by an overhead crane. As a result, it was undersized for some of the components that were supposed to be lifted by the crane.
Typical Recommendations
- Develop a process to define and agree upon the design scope before the detailed design process begins.
- Ensure that the needs of end-users are considered during the design process.
