ABS Group to Present on Best Practices for Pipeline Safety Management Systems at Pipeline Week 2016
NEWS ADVISORY--Steve Arendt, ABS Group Vice President of Global Oil, Gas and Chemical, will present the technical paper, "Best Practices for Implementing a Pipeline Safety Management System (PSMS)," on Wednesday, Sept. 21, at the 2016 Pipeline Week conference taking place Sept. 20-22 in the Woodlands, Texas.
Arendt will address the American National Standards Institute (ANSI)/American Petroleum Institute (API) Recommended Practice (RP) 1173 PSMS regulatory framework, which is intended to enhance safety, risk and integrity management and provide an opportunity for continual improvement of pipeline safety performance. ANSI/API RP 1173 provides requirements and guidance for pipeline operators and organizations that operate hazardous liquids and gas pipelines jurisdictional to the US Department of Transportation.
The paper outlines best practices for implementation that are based on ABS Group's more than 40 years of experience gained from implementing safety management systems in the midstream and upstream segments, as well as carrying out program audits in other process industry sectors.
"ABS Group co-authored the Guidelines for Implementing Process Safety Management, 2nd edition with the Center for Chemical Process Safety," says Arendt. "Our presentation focuses on this expertise and the many lessons we've learned in the field – working closely with industry and regulators – while guiding processes and developing safety standards for safety management systems.
"With knowledge of applying these practices in onshore petroleum refineries and onboard offshore oil and gas facilities, we understand that complex engineering problems require a risk-based approach to manage risk and enhance efficiency and safety for assets and operations. At ABS Group, we work with a careful eye toward helping clients achieve operational excellence while increasing safety, above all."
