Derek M. Bergeron

Derek M. Bergeron is a Technical Director at ABS Consulting with more than 28 years of experience in process hazard analysis (PHA), layer of protection analysis (LOPA), process safety management (PSM), inherently safer concepts, PSM compliance auditing, capital project design and execution, process optimization and plant operations. He specializes in managing, leading and documenting PHAs, hazard reviews and LOPAs for OSHA/EPA compliance for a wide range of industries, including oil and gas (including upstream/midstream/downstream production), chemical, silicon/ polysilicon, ammonia and other industries. He has led over 150 PHAs of PSM/RMP covered processes and many project hazard reviews/evaluations. His experience includes PSM program development, implementation, training and auditing for sites involving various highly hazardous chemicals.
Mr. Bergeron is the co-author and project manager of the American Institute of Chemical Engineer’s (AIChE’s) Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS) book entitled Guidelines for Revalidating a Process Hazard Analysis, Second Edition, published in 2023. He is an instructor for ABS Consulting’s PHA, PHA Revalidation and LOPA courses.
Prior to joining ABS Consulting, Mr. Bergeron held chemical/process engineering positions at WorleyParsons and Monsanto Company. His experience at these companies included PSM, engineering design, project management and process plant operations and optimization. Mr. Bergeron earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering from Tulane University.
