Marine Industry Safety, Risk and Compliance Solutions

Experience for Every Stage of Your Asset Lifecycle

For any vessel type, operating area or construction location, ABS Group offers decades of expertise delivering safety, reliability and integrity services to marine asset owners and operators throughout the project lifecycle—from concept, through newbuild planning, to decommissioning. Our marine specialists are recognized as an international authority in the maritime shipping community, contributing to maritime safety for more than 150 years.

Improving Efficiency and Performance for Global Fleets

We combine a detailed understanding of marine technical operations with engineering and naval architecture to help ship owners and operators achieve quality performance within reasonable schedule and cost parameters. Our global team leverages technology and years of experience to help clients maximize their return on investment.

Our marine services include feasibility studies, independent engineering review and analysis, construction monitoring, regulatory compliance guidance and third-party inspections.

Project Management and Marine Assessments

We assist owners with compliance matters in newbuild projects by providing guidance during the concept and design development phase, engineering services and plan review as well as technical services. Our experienced appraisers are accredited members of the American Society of Appraisers and are supported by a team of marine engineers, naval architects, professional marine surveyors and industry technical specialists.

For vessels being designed, our project managers use advanced technology, analysis and modeling to perform an independent review. Taking into account both construction and operational factors, we identify areas for improvement, define technical specifications, draft project requirements and provide guidance on preliminary budget estimates. Our engineers and project managers also advise clients throughout the shipbuilding process and oversee construction to help keep the project on schedule and within budget and technical specifications. We also verify design specifications, drawings and calculations against project requirements and regulatory standards.

Safety, Risk and Compliance

ABS Group's Safety, Risk and Compliance services help you manage diverse risks to minimize interruptions to your operations. Our practical engineering, technology and risk-based solutions follow applicable International Safety Management Code requirements and guidelines to help you comply with industry standards and regulations.

Supporting Environmental Compliance—Our years of experience working with regulatory bodies and understanding their policies and procedures enable us to assist vessel owners with meeting the latest industry requirements.

We help marine clients manage risk through prevention and mitigation strategies using tools such as HAZID and HAZOP, as well as fleet and safety assessments, to identify potential issues, develop risk scenarios and analyze consequences. When an incident does occur, we apply industry best practices and advanced technologies to investigate the incident and develop answers to limit the root causes and prevent similar events.

During vessel operations, we also offer services aimed at minimizing business interruption, mitigating adverse environmental impacts and reducing the vessel owner's carbon footprint. Audits and manual preparation help clients achieve regulatory compliance.

Project Management

Our team provides a ship owner with tailored project management services that may promote efficiencies and help minimize the risk of unexpected delays, technical inaccuracies and cost overruns. These services can be made available for newbuild projects, for major modifications and repairs or to evaluate potential projects as to their feasibility.

Condition Surveys and Fair Market Value

Owners must protect the value of their marine assets. For clients selling or purchasing marine assets, shipboard surveys provide valuable information as to a vessel's condition and fair market value. Often performed on short notice, a shipboard survey is crucial to evaluate the condition of the ship and its associated machinery. Since offers are often valid for a short period only, the information is critical when determining a counteroffer to the asking price.

ABS Group's appraisers are members of the American Society of Appraisers and proficient in the application of the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice as promoted by The Appraisal Foundation. Our appraisers are supported by a team of marine experts, naval architects, professional marine surveyors and industry technical experts.

Services to assist with determining fair market value, remaining useful life, residual value and replacement cost include:

  • General condition survey
  • Pre-purchase condition survey
  • On-hire and off-hire charterer condition survey
  • Protection and indemnity condition survey
  • Damage survey
  • Inclining experiment
  • Worldwide survey coverage on all sizes and types of vessels
